Impacts of Mesoscale Eddies on Biogeochemical Variables in the Northwest Pacific

چکیده

Mesoscale eddies play an important role in regulating biogeochemical cycles. However, the response of variables to cold and warm has not been well elucidated, mainly due most previous studies relying on remote sensing techniques lacking situ observations below surface water. Here, we used hydrographic biochemical data from one survey northwestern Pacific document vertical structure two eddies. We first compared changes key eddy core relative outside, explained layers (the mixing depth, pycnocline, nutricline, euphotic) causing these changes, then analyzed main environmental factors affecting chlorophyll a (Chla) phytoplankton communities. Finally focused mechanisms The results showed that biological (Chla, microphytoplankton, picophytoplankton), salinity, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), phosphate (DIP), silicate (DSi) increased by 0.2–134%, while core, they decreased 0.2–70% outside. were able force deep maximum (DCM), which rose or fell with nutricline euphotic depth (Zeu) as whole. Cold raised thermocline could lead about 20 m elevated DCM enhanced biomass when coincident. In contrast, drove isopycnals downward, resulting 10–25 drop decrease nutrient Chla concentrations at center significant difference community between outside might be direct influence both stoichiometry changes. contribution microphytoplankton total was much smaller than picophytoplankton oligotrophic waters where DIN:DIP DSi:DIN ratios are significantly low. Compared nutrients, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) factor controlling abundance attributed Zeu being consistently deeper mixed (Zm), whereas it likely limiting distribution community.

Impacts of Eddies and Mixing on Plankton Community Structure and Biogeochemical Cycling in the Sargasso Sea

The currents, fronts and eddies that comprise the oceanic mesoscale, sometimes referred to as the “internal weather of the sea,” are highly energetic and ubiquitous features of ocean circulation. Dynamical consequences of these phenomena include perturbation of the chemical and biological environment that can dramatically impact biogeochemical cycling in the ocean. The processes that regulate t...

Tuna and swordfish catch in the U.S. northwest Atlantic longline fishery in relation to mesoscale eddies

To analyze the effects of mesoscale eddies, sea surface temperature (SST), and gear configuration on the catch of Atlantic bluefin (Thunnus thynnus), yellowfin (Thunnus albacares), and bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) and swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the U.S. northwest Atlantic longline fishery, we constructed multivariate statistical models relating these variables to the catch of the four speci...

Impacts on Ocean Heat from Transient Mesoscale Eddies in a Hierarchy of Climate Models

The authors characterize impacts on heat in the ocean climate system from transient ocean mesoscale eddies. Their tool is a suite of centennial-scale 1990 radiatively forced numerical climate simulations from three GFDL coupledmodels comprising the ClimateModel, version 2.0–Ocean (CM2-O), model suite. CM2-O models differ in their ocean resolution: CM2.6 uses a 0.18 ocean grid, CM2.5 uses an int...

Statistical Characteristics of Mesoscale Eddies in the North Pacific Derived from Satellite Altimetry

The sea level anomaly data derived from satellite altimetry are analyzed to investigate statistical characteristics of mesoscale eddies in the North Pacific. Eddies are detected by a free-threshold eddy identification algorithm. The results show that the distributions of size, amplitude, propagation speed, and eddy kinetic energy of eddy follow the Rayleigh distribution. The most active regions...
